Service Agencies
HousingLink can help you help your clients, particularly if they are looking for affordable rental housing in the Twin Cities seven-county metropolitan area.
HousingLink distributes housing information primarily to service agencies.
HousingLink relies on service agencies to make resources accessible to those who need them.
-
Through their existing services, the service agencies may also eliminate barriers that housing seekers often face, such as limited transportation, limited understanding of the housing industry and limited English proficiency. By using HousingLink resources, staff at service agencies are able to more effectively and efficiently assist seekers with their housing related issues.
Service agencies choose how to use HousingLink's resources.
Agencies that are interested in learning more about the resources HousingLink offers can contact HousingLink at info@housinglink.org or call 612-522-2500.
We
also suggest you attend the next HousingLink 101.
We
also urge service agencies to complete an "Information for service
agencies" subscription form, which can be downloaded below.

Frequently Asked Questions about Refugee Services
I need information about available subsidized housing programs. What resources are available to explain these programs?
- HousingLink’s Housing Subsidies document provides a flow chart and contact information for the most popular housing subsidy programs.
- HousingLink’s “Big 3” document gives an overview of the three most-utilized affordable housing programs (Public Housing, Project-Based Section 8, and Section 8 Voucher program.)
- There are other subsidy programs also available to housing seekers. They can be found on HousingLink’s "Housing Programs by Number" resource.
I have a client with a Section 8 Voucher. They are interested in moving outside of the Minneapolis area. Are they able to transfer their Section 8 Voucher?
- When a tenant receives a Section 8 Voucher, they must live in the area served by the administering housing authority for a specified amount of time (residency requirement).
- When the tenant has fulfilled the residency requirement (usually a year) they may be able to transfer (port) their Section 8 Voucher to another area served by a different housing authority.
Before moving:
- Contact the current housing authority to confirm that they’ll allow the tenant to “port-out” their Section 8 Voucher.
- Then contact the housing authority serving the community to which they wish to move, and confirm that they’ll allow the tenant to “port-in” their Section 8 Voucher.
- For more information about portability and the communities served by the housing authorities, visit HousingLink’s Section 8 Voucher information page.
What is the Refugee Worker Helpline (612-302-8525)?
