JUST RELEASED: Q2 2012 Foreclosure Update
Released: May 2012
There were 4,836 foreclosures in Minnesota in Q1 of 2012, which is the lowest quarterly statewide total since 2007. Overall, the numbers are down from Q1 2011 by 10%. Although we are seeing what appears to be a slow downward trend over the past two years, it should be noted that the 4,836 foreclosures seen in Q1 2012 still far exceeds the 1,618 foreclosures averaged for each quarter in 2005, the first year sheriff sale records were totaled for the state of Minnesota.

JUST RELEASED: Foreclosure Recovery Progress Report Through Q4 2011
Released: February 2012
Thanks to support from Family Housing Fund and Twin Cities Local Support Initiatives Corporation (Twin Cities LISC), HousingLink is engaged in tracking foreclosure recovery efforts of the Minnesota Foreclosure Partners Council (MFPC) over a period of five years, via a series of semi-annual reports. The MFPC is a collaborative effort by local government agencies andnonprofits to address the foreclosure crisis in Minnesota.  In the Fall of 2010, HousingLink's quantitative measurement of three goals was adopted into the MFPC's Coordinated Plan to Address Foreclosures.

Released: February 2012
There were 21,298 foreclosures in Minnesota in 2011, which is down 17% from 2010, and the lowest statewide total in four years. However, the number of foreclosures stubbornly remains above the 20,000 mark, a figure which is over three times the number of annual foreclosures in 2005, the first year these numbers were compiled. HousingLink was commissioned to complete this report by The Minnesota Home Ownership Center, Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, Minnesota Housing, and Family Housing Fund.

Q3 2011 Foreclosure Update
Released: November 2011
There were 4,935 foreclosures in Minnesota in Q3 of 2011, down 32% from Q3 2010. Q3 2011 marks four consecutive quarters with fewer than 6,000 statewide foreclosures. While this follows four quarters in which the statewide count exceeded that number, the Q3 2011 figure of 4,935 still far exceeds the 1,618 foreclosures averaged in 2005, the first year sheriff sale records were totaled for the state of Minnesota.

2011 Semi-Annual Foreclosures in Minnesota
Released: August 2011
There were 11,257 foreclosures in Minnesota in the first two quarters of 2011. While residences are still being lost through foreclosure at rates far exceeding those of historic levels, the overall number of statewide foreclosures declined by 14 percent from the same period last year. A larger decline was seen in Greater Minnesota (down 19 percent) as compared to the Twin Cities seven-county metro (down 11 percent). This is in spite of an eight percent uptick from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2011.

Geographic Distribution of MN Foreclosures 2007-2011
Released: July 2011
HousingLink has been tracking Minnesota foreclosures at the county level since 2005 with nearly comprehensive statewide coverage since 2007. Over that time, we’ve seen the foreclosure crisis move from one largely based on mortgage products to one that is based on the economy (e.g. unemployment or under-employment). How might that transition affect Greater MN, relative to the Twin Cities 7-county metro area? We explored that issue by dividing all MN counties into quartiles, according to their rate of foreclosure, then comparing how that distribution shifts, over time. The resulting maps seem to indicate that that the crisis, which hit our urban communities particularly hard early on, has spread to other areas throughout the state. HousingLink is able to continue its efforts in tracking this critical measurement due to funding by the Minnesota Foreclosure Partners Council and cooperation by county sheriff departments.
